ERIS Experts – Soňa Kalenda (Vávrová)
Prof. Mgr. Soňa Kalenda Vávrová, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of social work at the Faculty of Social Studies, University of Ostrava. She deals mainly with qualitative strategies in social work research. She surveys social work aims, positions of social workers in social services, the quality of social services, and their transformation; she focuses above all on endangered children, the elderly, and persons with a health disability.
She especially deals with issues of de-institutionalization and transformation of various types of total institutions, residential social services, and residential institutions for children and minors. She also focuses on the research of self-regulation in learning, behaviour, and self-regulation in children and minors in institution care. She was a member of the research teams working on projects supported by the Czech Science Foundation titled Cognitive and Non-cognitive Determinants of Self-Regulated Learning Development in Students of Helping Professions (2009–2011), an investigator of the projects titled Understanding the Mechanism of Self-Regulation in Children and Minors in Institutional Care (2013–2015) and Social Adjustment of Homeless Children with Domestic Violence Experience in the Territory of the City of Ostrava (2018–2020). Currently, she is a member of the research team working on the project supported by the Czech Science Foundation titled Blind Spots in Non-Formal Education of Adults: Non-Participants and their Social Worlds (2019–2021).
The centre of her research interest are also matters of social and emotional skill development among students and staff of helping professions and socially intelligent accompanying, and she also focuses on an understanding of time and the finality of life. As an independent expert, she cooperates with several social services for children and families to which she provides supervision, support, and counselling. She cooperated with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs as an independent expert in several projects which were aimed at deinstitutionalization of social services.
